In September 2014 St Thomas More Teaching School became a secondary school, welcoming its first intake of Year 7s. We started by expecting 45 from our Primary Catholic Feeder school, but our success saw this number rapidly rise to 62 as parents from other middle schools wished for their children to join our successful school earlier than in the usual Year 9. In September 2015, we had both Year 7 and 8s with the new Year 7 numbers rising to 75.
The academic year 2014 15 has been one of great success for St Thomas More. The school achieved excellent GCSE results in many Departments and was one of only two schools in Bedford Borough to secure a raise in results to the previous year. Analysis of data shows that 20 subjects performed significantly above national averages. English rose by 20% in their A*-C after effective interventions and five subjects gained a full 100% A*-C, with five more gaining per cents in the very high 90s.
In addition to the success of students, the school has continued to develop its Inspirit Teaching School. This is now a vibrant element of school operations with a significant turnover. It enables the school to invest in supporting other schools and in maintaining quality within St Thomas More School. We are currently supporting two schools in Bedford Borough both through direct intensive School to School Support Programmes and more general courses that inspire excellence and improvement.
The school has completed the construction of a new Drama Studio facility, completely restructured and refurbished the Design technology areas, built a second floor on to the Teaching School Block which now houses the Bedford Catholic Schools Trust Finance Offices, and redesigned the former Site Agent’s house to become a School Support Block housing the Exams Officer, Data Manager and Personnel Manager.
