Castle Newnham Federation

About the federation

Castle Newnham is a federation of two excellent schools with pupils aged 4-13 but with plans in place to develop as an all-through school 4-16. Both school sites are set relatively close to the centre of Bedford in a pleasant suburb. Pupils who attend come from the immediate local area, as well as from further away in Bedford. Our federation also includes Hazeldene School, whose pupils will join our federation for the secondary phase of their education from September 2019.

The school sites

The Castle site (pupils from nursery to Year 4) is situated nearby in a listed Victorian building on Goldington Road. On this site are classrooms leading off two main halls, offices, a dining room and a new building housing an ICT suite and the nursery. Children in reception have dedicated outdoor play spaces.

The Newnham site is near the university on Polhill Avenue. Most classrooms are in the main building which includes the four storey tower. There is a separate year 5 annex and a new specialist history and geography building. Plans are in place for a number of new classrooms and significantly improved facilities over the next year or so. There are two well-equipped ICT rooms and all classrooms have internet access and interactive whiteboards linked to a PC with additional mobile technology.

Ambition and care for each of our pupils is at the heart of everything we do. We believe in traditional values, forward thinking and one successful and enjoyable journey for each of our wonderful pupils.

Our staff are a committed and dedicated team and our pupils are a source of great pride for their enthusiasm, courtesy and care for others. We encourage strong links with families, with our local partners and, increasingly, with international partners. We have active links with schools in France, Germany, Denmark and (recently) Finland.

We have strong partnerships with, among others, the University of Bedfordshire and the St Neots Learning Trust. We are the lead school in the School Direct training partnership (Newnham Partnership) and have almost 20 trainees (both primary and secondary) ready to start their initial teacher training in September 2016. Our CPD is a strength as acknowledged by our recent Quality Mark for Professional Development from the University of London Institute of Education.
